Using an automatic transmission in Volvo cars
Gearbox modes:
* P (Park): Puts the transmission into park mode and locks the wheels.
* R (Reverse): Engages reverse gear.
* N (Neutral): Sets the box to the neutral position.
* D (Drive): Normal driving mode for most conditions.
* S (Sport): Provides sportier behavior, with higher gearshift speeds and faster acceleration.
* W (Winter): Designed for driving in winter conditions, starting in 2nd gear to improve traction.
Switch between modes:
* Press the shift lock button (located on the shift lever).
* Move the gear shift lever to the desired mode.
* Release the shift lock button.
Switch on the fly:
* To switch between D and S, use the gear selector (+/-).
* To shift into N, R or P, you must stop and put your foot on the brake.
Control functions:
* Turning off the ignition: Make sure the transmission is in position P before turning off the ignition.
*Forced gear shifting: If you need to force a gear shift, use the gear selector (+/-). This can be useful for overtaking or engine braking.
* Hill Hold Mode: Prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards on inclines when the brake is released. Activated automatically in D mode.
* Anti-tamper: The gear shift lever can only be moved to the P position when the brake pedal is depressed.
Tips for use:
* When stopping for a short period of time, use N mode.
* For long-term parking, place the vehicle in P position and apply the parking brake.
*Service your automatic transmission regularly as recommended in your owner’s manual.
* Avoid sudden acceleration and braking as this may cause transmission failure.
