The automatic transmission selector position sensor is responsible for the following:
* Determining the current position of the automatic transmission selector lever: The sensor monitors the position of the selector lever and reports it to the automatic transmission control unit.
* Engine Start Inhibitor: The sensor can prevent the engine from starting if the selector lever is not in the Park (P) or Neutral (N) position.
* Transmission mode control: The sensor can signal the automatic transmission control unit to select a transmission mode (for example, D, R, L).
*Transmission Neutral: If there is a problem with the automatic transmission electronics or mechanical components, a sensor can disengage the transmission and place the transmission in neutral for safety.
* Torque converter lock-up detection: On some automatic transmissions, the shift position sensor may be involved in determining whether the torque converter should be locked to improve fuel economy.
