The automatic transmission emergency mode in the BMW E34 is designed to protect the transmission from serious damage in the event of a malfunction.

When the automatic transmission control system detects a problem, it puts the transmission into emergency mode. In this mode, the transmission operates only in 3rd or 4th gear (depending on the model).

Emergency mode of automatic transmission can be caused by the following reasons:

*Low or poor transmission fluid level
* Faulty sensors or solenoids
* Contamination or blockage of hydraulic channels
*Wiring problems
*Mechanical failures such as excessive wear or breakage

Signs of automatic transmission emergency mode:

* Transmission mode indicator lamp lights up (usually red symbol “P/R/N/D/3”)
* Noticeable reduction in shift performance
* Limited gear range (usually 3rd or 4th gear only)
* Slipping or jerking when shifting gears

Actions in emergency mode of automatic transmission:

* Move the car to a safe place.
* Check the level and condition of the transmission fluid.
* Scan the automatic transmission control system for fault codes.
* Contact an experienced mechanic or auto repair shop to diagnose and repair the automatic transmission.
