Training an automatic transmission (AT) after an oil change is a procedure for adapting the gearbox to the new oil and updating its internal settings. Here are the steps that are usually followed when training an automatic transmission:
1. Reset adaptations:
* Connect the scanner to the car.
*Go to the Transmission Control Module (TCM).
* Find and select the option to reset adaptations.
2. Adaptive learning mode:
* Start the engine and let it idle.
* Move the gear selector to “D” (Drive) and hold the brake pedal.
* Accelerate to 60 km/h and maintain this speed for 30 seconds.
* Stop and keep the vehicle idling for 30 seconds.
* Repeat steps 3 and 4 several times (usually 3 to 5 times).
3. Switch point adaptation:
*Switch to manual shift mode (if equipped).
* Accelerate the car from 0 to 100 km/h by manually shifting into each gear when reaching a certain speed.
* Repeat the process 3-5 times.
4. Check:
* Reset the adaptation counters on the scanner.
* Drive the vehicle in different driving modes to check that the gear shifts correctly and that there is no slipping.
Purpose of the learning process:
* Update internal transmission values such as oil pressure, shift points and torque converter lockup control parameters.
* Adapt the gearbox to the viscosity and composition of the new oil.
* Eliminate any shifting problems that may occur due to changes in the oil.
Note:
*The training procedure may vary depending on the vehicle make and model.
* Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for training the automatic transmission after changing the oil.
*If you are unsure how to complete the training yourself, consult a qualified mechanic.
