General signs:

* Slipping: The transmission does not shift to the next gear as usual, but “slips.”
* Gear shift delay: Gear changes occur with a noticeable delay.
* Hard gear shifting: Shifts are accompanied by strong shocks and vibrations.
* Extraneous noise: A grinding, humming, or whining noise is heard when changing gears or driving the vehicle.
* Burnt smell: When the transmission is operating, there is a smell of burnt oil or clutches.
* Oil Leak: There are signs of transmission fluid leaking under the vehicle.

Signs specific to different types of automatic transmission:

Hydraulic automatic transmission:

* Poor gear shifting: Gear shifts occur at inappropriate times, such as too early or too late.
* Reduced oil pressure: Reduced oil pressure leads to unstable operation and slipping of the gearbox.

CVTs (CVT):

* Humming or vibration: Faulty belts or pulleys may cause humming or vibration.
* Slipping during acceleration: The CVT may slip when the vehicle accelerates.

Robotic manual transmission (AMT):

* Delay when changing gears: Gear changes are slower than with a manual transmission.
* Jerking and Stuttering: The vehicle may jerk or “stick” when shifting gears.

Double-clutch automatic transmission (DCT):

* Crunching sound when shifting from first to second gear: You may experience problems shifting from first to second gear.
* Vibration when starting to drive: Vibration may be felt when starting off.

It’s important to note that some of these signs may also indicate other problems with the vehicle, such as engine or transmission problems. If you suspect your vehicle has a transmission problem, you should take it to an experienced mechanic for diagnosis and repair.
