Procedure for changing the oil in a Volvo XC90 automatic transmission
Materials:
* Approximately 6-8 liters of JWS 3309 gear oil
* New oil filter
* New pan gasket
* Brush for cleaning the tray
* Keys and screwdrivers
Tools:
* Lift or rolling jack
* Trays for collecting used oil
* Funnel
* Pump for pumping out liquid (optional)
Procedure:
1. Preparing the car
* Place the car on a lift or use a rolling jack.
* Place a wedge under the rear wheels for safety.
2. Draining used oil
* Locate the automatic transmission oil pan drain plug.
* Place a tray to collect used oil.
* Carefully unscrew the drain plug and allow the oil to drain.
3. Removing the oil pan
* After most of the oil has drained, remove the bolts securing the oil pan.
* Carefully remove the oil pan, being careful not to spill any remaining oil.
4. Cleaning the pan and replacing the filter
* Clean the oil pan of old oil and dirt using a brush.
*Remove the old oil filter and replace it with a new one.
5. Installing the oil pan
* Apply a new gasket to the oil pan.
* Reinstall the oil pan and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
6. Refilling with new oil
* Using a funnel, pour new oil into the gearbox. The amount of oil that needs to be filled depends on the car model. Refer to the instruction manual for specific information.
* Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer.
7. Checking the oil level
* Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
* Shift the automatic transmission selector through all positions and back to parking mode.
* Measure the oil level with the automatic transmission dipstick. The oil level should be between the “Min” and “Max” marks on the dipstick.
* If necessary, add oil to the required level.
8. Reset maintenance counter
*Locate the automatic transmission service meter button and press and hold it until the display shows “Transmission Serviced.”
9. Test drive
* Lower the car and take it for a test drive.
* Check the gear changes and make sure they occur smoothly and without disruption.
Note:
* It is recommended to change the automatic transmission oil every 60,000 – 80,000 km or in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
*If you are unsure of your technical skills, have your automatic transmission oil changed by a qualified mechanic.
