The Volvo automatic transmission’s gear selector allows the driver to select different gears and driving modes. It is usually located on the center console of the car.

Gear layout

The gear layout may vary depending on the specific Volvo model, but a typical layout looks like this:

| D | Drive |
| S | Sports mode |
| W | Winter mode |

Driving modes

In addition to the main gear shift positions, the Volvo automatic transmission selector may also have additional buttons or switches to access various driving modes:

* Sport (S): Optimizes the transmission for sportier driving dynamics with faster gear changes and higher engine speeds.
* Winter (W): Designed for winter conditions, provides smoother starting and shifting on slippery surfaces.
* Eco (not on all models): Helps optimize fuel consumption by changing gear shift settings.
* Hold (not on all models): Holds the vehicle in place on slopes without using the brake pedal.

To change gears using the selector, you usually need to do the following:

1. Press the selector unlock button (if equipped).
2. Move the selector to the desired position.
3. Release the unlock button (if equipped).
