How to check the oil level in a Toyota automatic transmission

Materials:

* ATF dipstick
* Rag or paper towel
* Wheel chock
*If possible lift or ramps

Instructions:

1. Place the car in park. Apply the parking brake and block the wheels with wheel chocks.
2. Start the engine and let it idle. Make sure the gear shift lever is in the “P” position.
3. Pull out the ATF dipstick. It is usually located near the engine and has a brightly colored handle.
4. Wipe the dipstick with a clean rag or paper towel and reinsert it into the tube.
5. Pull the dipstick out again and check the oil level. The fluid level should be between the “COLD” (cold) and “HOT” (hot) marks on the dipstick.
6. If the oil level is below the “COLD” mark, add oil. Use only ATF oil recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
7. If the oil level is above the “HOT” mark, drain the excess. To do this, contact a mechanic or car service center.

Note:

* ATF level should be checked with the engine and transmission hot after driving for at least 10 miles (16 km).
* The frequency of checking the ATF oil level depends on the vehicle model and manufacturer’s requirements. This is usually done every 30,000-60,000 miles (48,000-96,000 km).
*If you notice low ATF levels or unusual oil color or odor, have the problem diagnosed by a mechanic.
