Partial automatic transmission oil change for Toyota Highlander
Required tools and materials:
* 4 liters of Toyota ATF WS oil (or equivalent)
* Funnel
*Clean cloth
* 17mm wrench or ratchet
* New drain plug
Steps:
1. Preparing the car
* Park the vehicle with the parking brake locked.
* Warm up the engine and transmission for several minutes.
2. Security
* Take all necessary precautions as when handling hot liquids.
* Wear protective gloves and clothing.
3. Drain the old oil
* Locate the automatic transmission drain plug, usually located at the bottom of the automatic transmission pan.
* Place a container under the drain plug to drain the old oil.
* Using a wrench or ratchet, carefully unscrew the drain plug.
* Drain the automatic transmission oil into a drainage container.
4. Replacing the plug
* Clean the drain plug and O-ring with a clean cloth.
* Apply a small amount of new oil to the O-ring.
* Reinstall the new drain plug.
* Tighten the drain plug to the recommended torque (see your vehicle’s repair manual).
5. Filling with new oil
* Using a funnel, pour 4 liters of new oil into the automatic transmission.
*Use the transmission fluid recommended in your vehicle’s repair manual.
6. Checking the oil level
* Start the engine and change gears several times.
* Turn off the engine and allow the oil to drain for a few minutes.
* Check the oil level using the dipstick.
*Add oil as necessary to reach recommended level.
7. Resetting the oil aging counter (optional)
* Some Toyota models are equipped with an automatic transmission oil aging counter.
*Use a diagnostic scan tool to reset this counter after an oil change.
Note:
* A partial automatic transmission oil change replaces only about 25-30% of the old oil.
* For a more complete oil change, it is recommended that you consult a professional mechanic.
* The automatic transmission oil change interval may vary depending on operating conditions, such as driving type and climate.
