The procedure for reading Toyota automatic transmission self-diagnosis codes:
1. Turn on the ignition, but do not start the engine.
2. Locate the OBD-II diagnostic connector under the steering column.
3. Insert a key paperclip or thin wire into the TC and GND pins (4 and 13 for Type 1 connector, 13 and 12 for Type 2 connector).
4. Notice the shift/engine light flashing.
5. Long flashes (approximately 1-2 seconds) indicate the first digit of the code.
6. Short blinks (about 0.5-1 seconds) indicate the second digit of the code.
7. The codes will appear as a continuous series of flashes.
8. Write down any codes displayed.
