Automatic transmission self-diagnosis Toyota Camry

Note: This procedure applies to Camry models manufactured from 1995 to 2001.

Required tools:

* Paperclip or piece of wire

Steps:

1. Stop the car and put it in park.
2. Locate the diagnostic connector under the hood. It is usually located near the fuse box or battery.
3. Take a paperclip or piece of wire and insert it into the “TC” or “DLC” hole on the diagnostic connector. Hold it for 3 seconds.
4. Remove the paperclip or wire from the connector.
5. Start the engine.
6. A diagnostic code will be displayed on the instrument panel. It will flash in a sequence of long (1.5 seconds) and short (0.5 seconds) flashes.
7. Calculate the code by counting the number of long and short flashes. For example, a long flash followed by two short flashes corresponds to code 12.
8. Continue counting codes until code 00 is displayed, indicating the end of the diagnosis.

Decoding codes:

* 11 – Malfunction of the gear selector position sensor
* 12 – Shift solenoid fault 1-2
* 13 – Shift solenoid fault 2-3
* 14 – Shift solenoid fault 3-4
* 15 – Malfunction of the torque converter lock-up solenoid
* 16 – Pressure control solenoid malfunction
* 21 – Error in the transmission fluid temperature sensor circuit
* 22 – Vehicle speed sensor malfunction
* 23 – Malfunction of the output shaft speed sensor
* 41 – Low transmission fluid level
* 51 – Shift solenoid 1-2 circuit malfunction
* 52 – Shift solenoid 2-3 circuit malfunction
* 53 – Shift solenoid 3-4 circuit malfunction
* 54 – Torque converter lock-up solenoid circuit malfunction
* 55 – Pressure control solenoid circuit malfunction
* 71 – Transmission system malfunction

Important:

*If any fault code is displayed, contact a qualified mechanic for further diagnosis and repair.
* Do not repeat the self-diagnosis test too often, as this may drain the battery.
