Towing a vehicle with an automatic transmission
When towing a vehicle with an automatic transmission, there are several key factors to consider:
* Turn off the ignition system. This will prevent the engine from running and take the load off the transmission.
* Put the car in park or neutral mode. This will disconnect the engine from the transmission.
* Use a tow rope that is suitable for the weight of the vehicle.
*Do not tow long distances. An automatic transmission relies on lubricant to be driven by the engine. Without the engine running, the lubricant does not circulate, which can damage the transmission. It is recommended to tow for a distance of no more than 80 km.
* Tow at low speed and avoid sudden acceleration.
* Stop and check the transmission after 30 minutes of towing. Make sure it doesn’t overheat or make strange noises. If necessary, allow the transmission to cool.
Possible damage due to improper towing:
*Damage to oil pan pump
*Transmission overheating
* Clutch wear
* Damage to gears
Recommended towing method:
*Connect the tow rope to the front tow points on both vehicles.
*One person must be behind the wheel of the towed vehicle to operate it.
* A second person must be in the vehicle that will be pulled and control the speed and braking.
Precautions:
*If possible, use a flatbed tow truck to tow an automatic vehicle.
*If you have no choice but to tow, follow the instructions above and proceed with caution.
*Check the transmission fluid level regularly after towing.
