Torque converter oil seal, automatic transmission Mitsubishi Outlander

Purpose:

Prevents automatic transmission fluid (ATF) from leaking from the torque converter that connects the engine and transmission.

Location:

Located between the torque converter and the gearbox housing.

Symptoms of oil seal wear or damage:

* ATF leak
*Reduced ATF level
* Transmission slipping or other gear shifting problems
* Burnt ATF smell

Replacing the torque converter oil seal:

Replacing a torque converter seal is a complex task that requires special tools and knowledge. Typically this task requires removing the transmission and torque converter.

Replacement procedure:

1. Remove the gearbox.
2. Remove the torque converter.
3. Remove the old oil seal from the pump shaft.
4. Apply some transmission fluid to the inner rim of the new oil seal.
5. Install a new oil seal on the pump shaft.
6. Install the torque converter.
7. Install the gearbox.
8. Fill the transmission with the recommended amount of ATF.

Recommendations:

* Use only original or high quality oil seals.
* Replace the torque converter seal every time the transmission is removed.
* Check ATF level regularly and top up if necessary.
*If you notice ATF leaks or other transmission problems, take it to a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.
