Torque converter for automatic transmission Toyota Land Cruiser 100

A torque converter is a hydraulic device that transmits torque from the engine to the transmission. It serves as a clutch in an automatic transmission and ensures smooth transitions between gears.

The design of the torque converter on the Land Cruiser 100 automatic transmission

The Land Cruiser 100 torque converter consists of three main elements:

* Pump: Driven by the engine crankshaft, it forces transmission fluid into the turbine.
* Turbine: Connected to the transmission input shaft and receives transmission fluid from the pump.
* Stator: located between the pump and turbine and directs the flow of transmission fluid.

Operating principle of a torque converter

* When the engine is running, the pump forces transmission fluid into the turbine.
* Transmission fluid leaves the turbine and enters the stator at an angle.
* The stator directs the flow of transmission fluid back to the turbine, increasing its torque.
* Increased torque is transmitted to the transmission input shaft.
*As vehicle speed increases, the torque converter gradually locks up, reducing slip and improving efficiency.

Types of torque converters for automatic transmission Land Cruiser 100

The Land Cruiser 100 automatic transmission uses two types of torque converters:

*Single Stage Torque Converter: Has one stage of torque increase and locks up at higher speeds.
*Multi-stage torque converter: Features multiple stages of torque increase and locks up progressively for a smoother ride and better fuel economy.

Torque Converter Maintenance

The torque converter is a maintenance-free component and does not require regular maintenance. However, to ensure its proper operation it is necessary:

* Use transmission fluid of the recommended type and grade.
* Replace transmission fluid and filter regularly.
* Avoid sudden gear changes or slipping.
