Torque converter device
The torque converter is the main element of an automatic transmission (automatic transmission) and performs the following functions:
* transmission of torque from the engine to the gearbox
* smoothing gear changes
* increased torque at low speeds
The torque converter consists of the following main components:
* Drive Shaft: Connects to the engine crankshaft.
* Turbine wheel: Connects to the transmission input shaft.
* Reactor wheel: located between the drive and turbine wheels.
* Torque converter housing: contains working fluid (gear oil).
Operating principle of a torque converter
The torque converter operates on the principle of transmitting torque through a working fluid. The operating principle is as follows:
1. Torque is supplied to the drive shaft: The engine transmits torque to the torque converter drive shaft.
2. Working fluid transmits torque: The drive wheel rotates the working fluid, which transmits torque to the turbine wheel.
3. Torque Enhancement: The reaction wheel directs the flow of working fluid back to the drive wheel, which increases the torque at the turbine wheel.
4. Smooth Gear Shifts: The torque converter allows the turbine wheel to slide relative to the drive wheel, which smooths out gear shifts and reduces jerking.
