Suzuki Vitara automatic transmission control unit
The automatic transmission control unit (Transmission Control Module, TCM) in the Suzuki Vitara is responsible for controlling the automatic transmission. It receives input from various sensors and issues appropriate commands to the shift solenoids and other automatic transmission components.
Location:
*Depending on the Vitara model and year, the TCM may be located in the following locations:
* Inside the automatic transmission housing
*Under the hood next to the fuse box
*Under the center console
Functions:
TCM performs the following functions:
* Gear shift control based on input data from vehicle speed, engine speed and accelerator pedal position sensors
* Torque converter lock-up for improved efficiency
* Adjustment of fluid pressure in the automatic transmission for smooth gear shifting
* Automatic transmission protection from overheating and other malfunctions
Signs of a faulty TCM:
A faulty TCM may cause the following symptoms:
*Slipping or failure to shift gears
*Hard or delayed gear shifting
* Flashing or illuminated ‘Check Engine’ warning light
* Difficult acceleration or loss of power
* Extraneous noise or vibration when shifting gears
Replacement:
If diagnostics indicate a faulty TCM, it must be replaced. Replacing a TCM is usually performed by a trained mechanic and requires special equipment to program the new module.
Preventative Maintenance:
To extend the life of the TCM and automatic transmission, it is recommended:
*Replace automatic transmission fluid regularly
* Avoid aggressive driving
* Monitor the automatic transmission fluid level
* Replace or clean automatic transmission sensors if necessary
