Torque transmission
The transfer case distributes torque from the gearbox between the front and rear wheels of the vehicle. The Suzuki Grand Vitara with automatic transmission uses two all-wheel drive schemes:
* Part-time 4WD with manual switching of drive modes and without the possibility of permanent use of all-wheel drive.
* Full-time 4WD with permanent all-wheel drive and automatic torque distribution between the front and rear wheels.
Drive modes Part-time 4WD
* 2H (rear-wheel drive): Torque is transmitted only to the rear wheels.
* 4H (all-wheel drive): Torque is transmitted to all four wheels with a rigid distribution of 50/50.
* 4L (four-wheel drive with low range): Lowers the gear ratio for increased torque and traction in off-road situations.
Drive modes Full-time 4WD
* Auto: The transfer case automatically distributes torque between the front and rear wheels depending on driving conditions.
* 4H Lock: Locks 50/50 torque split for maximum off-road traction.
How to switch drive modes
Part-time 4WD:
1. Stop the car on a level surface.
2. Move the transfer case lever to the desired position.
3. Engage 4WD only when driving on off-road or slippery surfaces.
Full-time 4WD:
1. Modes switch automatically.
2. To engage 4H Lock, move the transfer case lever to the “4H Lock” position.
Important Notes
* Do not switch drive modes on the fly.
*Do not use low range 4WD (4L) on paved roads as this may damage the transmission.
*Service the transfer case regularly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
