Changing the oil in a Suzuki Grand Vitara automatic transmission
Tools and materials:
* New automatic transmission oil (check owner’s manual for recommended type and quantity)
* New automatic transmission oil filter (if applicable)
* Automatic transmission oil drain plug and gasket
* Keys or ratchet with heads
* Funnel
*Clean cloth or paper towels
Instructions:
1. Safety First: Park the vehicle on a level surface, set the parking brake, and allow the engine to cool.
2. Locate the oil drain plug: Look under the car and locate the oil drain plug on the automatic transmission crankcase. It is usually marked with the letter «D» or has a fine notch.
3. Drain the old oil: Place a tray or bowl under the oil drain plug. Carefully loosen the plug with a wrench or ratchet. Drain the old oil into a container.
4. Replace the drain plug gasket: If the drain plug gasket shows signs of wear or damage, replace it with a new gasket.
5. Clean the drain plug: Wipe the drain plug and area around it with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove any remaining oil.
6. Reinstall the drain plug: Apply a small amount of clean oil to the threads of the drain plug and hand-tighten it. Then tighten the plug using a wrench or ratchet, but do not over-tighten it.
7. Install a new oil filter (if applicable): If your automatic transmission has a replacement oil filter, jack up the front of the vehicle and remove the guard. Find the automatic transmission oil filter and unscrew it with a wrench or ratchet. Install the new filter and tighten it by hand.
8. Fill with new oil: Determine the oil fill hole on the automatic transmission. It is usually located on the side of the transmission housing. Insert a funnel into the hole and add the recommended amount of new oil.
9. Check the oil level (if applicable): If your automatic transmission has a dipstick, remove it, wipe it with a clean cloth, and reinsert it. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level. It should be between the Min and Max marks on the dipstick.
10. Bleed the system: Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Move the gear shift lever to each position for a few seconds. This will pump new oil through the system.
11. Check for leaks: Stop the engine and wait a few minutes for excess oil to drain. Inspect the car for leaks under the automatic transmission. If leaks are found, tighten the drain plug or replace damaged parts.
12. Reset the oil change counter (if applicable): Some Grand Vitara models have an automatic transmission oil change counter reset feature. Refer to your owner’s manual for specific instructions for your model.
