Replacing the automatic transmission pan gasket on a Subaru Legacy
Tools and materials:
* New automatic transmission pan
* New automatic transmission pan gasket
* Set of ratchet wrenches
* Hex keys
* Flat head screwdriver
* Rags
* Engine for draining/catching oil
*Brake fluid
Instructions:
1. Precautions:
* Safety first! Set the car to the parking brake and disconnect the battery terminal.
* Allow the transmission to cool before starting work.
2. Draining the automatic transmission fluid:
* Locate the drain plug on the automatic transmission pan.
* Place the engine under the plug to drain the oil.
* Carefully unscrew the drain plug and drain the fluid into the engine.
3. Removing the automatic transmission pan:
* Disconnect the electrical connectors connected to the automatic transmission pan.
* Use an adjustable wrench or wrench to loosen and remove the bolts securing the transmission pan.
* Carefully remove the automatic transmission pan from the vehicle.
4. Removing the old gasket:
* Use a flathead screwdriver to carefully remove the old gasket from the transmission pan and transmission housing.
* Thoroughly clean the contact surfaces of gasket residues.
5. Installing a new gasket:
* Apply a thin layer of high temperature sealant around the perimeter of the new gasket.
* Place a new gasket on the automatic transmission pan.
6. Installing the automatic transmission pan:
* Carefully install the automatic transmission pan onto the vehicle.
* Tighten the automatic transmission pan mounting bolts to the required tightening torque.
7. Filling automatic transmission fluid:
* Using a funnel, fill the automatic transmission with fluid through the dipstick hole.
*Use the correct type and amount of fluid as specified in the instruction manual.
8. Air removal:
* Start the engine and change gears in each position for a few seconds.
*Continue to add fluid as needed until the level stabilizes.
9. Reconnecting connectors:
* Connect the electrical connectors to the automatic transmission pan.
10. Completion:
* Tighten the drain plug to the required torque.
* Check the brake fluid level and add if necessary.
* Connect the battery terminal.
Adviсe:
* Make sure the transmission pan and transmission housing are clean and free of debris before installing a new gasket.
*Use a high temperature sealant designed for transmissions.
* Observe the required tightening torque when installing the automatic transmission pan mounting bolts.
* Check the automatic transmission fluid level a few days after replacement.
