Required materials:
* ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) for Subaru that matches your vehicle’s automatic transmission type (check your owner’s manual)
* New automatic transmission crankcase gasket
* New automatic transmission filter (if possible)
* Funnel for filling liquid
* Wrenches or ratchet
* Drain pan
Step by step instructions:
1. Place the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
2. Warm up the engine to operating temperature.
3. Open the hood and find the automatic transmission dipstick. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a clean cloth.
4. Place a pan under the automatic transmission drain hole at the bottom of the transmission.
5. Loosen the drain plug using a wrench or ratchet. Do not unscrew it completely.
6. Allow the automatic transmission fluid to drain into the pan. This may take a few minutes.
7. Once the fluid stops flowing, completely unscrew the drain plug and remove the old gasket.
8. Install a new gasket on the drain plug and screw it back on.
9. Locate the torque converter drain hole using the owner’s manual.
10. Place a drain pan under the torque converter drain hole.
11. Loosen the torque converter drain bolt. Allow the automatic transmission fluid to drain into the pan.
12. Once the fluid stops flowing, completely unscrew the bolt and remove the old washer.
13. Install a new washer on the bolt and tighten it back.
14. Remove the automatic transmission pan using a wrench or ratchet.
15. Remove the old automatic transmission filter, if equipped.
16. Clean the surface of the automatic transmission housing and install a new filter (if equipped).
17. Install a new automatic transmission housing gasket.
18. Reinstall the pan onto the transmission and tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern.
19. Add new automatic transmission fluid to the transmission through the filler neck on the dipstick. Use a funnel to pour in the liquid.
20. Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
21. Shift through all gear ranges, holding each for a few seconds.
22. Check the automatic transmission fluid level on the dipstick. If necessary, add fluid to the mark.
23. Repeat steps 20-22 until the fluid level is stable.
Adviсe:
* Always use only automatic transmission fluid recommended by the manufacturer.
* Replacing the automatic transmission filter is not always necessary, but it is recommended to do it every 60,000-90,000 kilometers traveled.
* Check the automatic transmission fluid level regularly, especially after replacement.
*If the automatic transmission fluid is dark in color or has a burning smell, more serious repairs may be required. Contact a professional mechanic.
