External signs:

* Difficulty changing gears: jerking, hesitation or slipping of gears.
* Grinding or whining: unusual noises that get louder when changing gears.
*Slipping: The engine revs at high speeds, but the car does not accelerate properly.
* Transmission fluid leaks: fluid stains under the car or under the hood.
* Dashboard errors: The ‘Check Engine’ or ‘Transmission Fault’ lights may indicate problems with the transmission.

Internal signs:

* Worn friction discs and bands: this leads to slipping and difficulty shifting gears.
* Torque converter malfunction: transfers power from the engine to the transmission. Malfunctions lead to problems with transmission and fuel consumption.
* Failure of solenoids: solenoid valves that control the flow of fluid in the transmission. Malfunctions can cause incorrect gear shifting.
* Contaminated transmission fluid: Time and wear contaminate the fluid, resulting in reduced lubrication and cooling.
* Wear of bearings and gears: This causes noise and vibration when driving.

Other signs:

* Increased fuel consumption: A faulty transmission can reduce fuel efficiency.
* Reduced performance: Vehicle acceleration and response may be reduced.
* Lag when starting from a stop: The transmission may slip or respond more slowly when starting from a stop.
* Shifting into Neutral: The vehicle may sometimes shift into neutral unexpectedly.
* Burning smell: May indicate overheating or worn transmission components.
