Location and replacement of the automatic transmission selector position sensor in Chevrolet
Tools and materials:
* Set of wrenches or ratchets
* Flat head screwdriver
* New automatic transmission selector position sensor
Step by step instructions:
1. Locate the sensor.
* The automatic transmission selector position sensor is usually located on the side or rear of the transmission.
*On most Chevrolet models, the sensor is located on the driver’s side.
2. Disconnect the battery terminal.
* This will ensure your safety and prevent short circuit.
3. Remove the automatic transmission selector housing.
* Locate the housing around the shift selector and remove it using a flathead screwdriver.
4. Disconnect the sensor wiring harness connector.
* Locate the wiring harness connector connected to the automatic transmission selector position sensor.
* Press the chip latch and pull it to release.
5. Unscrew the sensor.
* Use a wrench or ratchet to loosen the automatic transmission selector position sensor mounting bolt.
* Unscrew the sensor by hand.
6. Install a new sensor.
* Screw in the new automatic transmission selector position sensor manually.
* Tighten the mounting bolt.
7. Connect the sensor wiring harness connector.
* Connect the wiring harness connector to the new sensor.
8. Install the automatic transmission selector housing.
* Put the automatic transmission selector housing back into place.
9. Connect the battery terminal.
* Connect the negative battery terminal back to the battery.
10. Start the engine and check the operation of the sensor.
* Start the engine and switch the automatic transmission selector to different positions.
* Make sure the sensor registers the selector lever position correctly.
Note:
* When replacing the automatic transmission selector position sensor, it is recommended to reset the transmission control module (TCM) memory settings.
* To reset the TCM memory, refer to your specific vehicle’s owner’s manual.
