Running in the automatic transmission after changing the oil
After changing the automatic transmission (ATT) oil, it is recommended to carry out a break-in process to ensure proper operation of the transmission and optimize its performance.
Steps to break in an automatic transmission:
1. Warm up the engine and gearbox:
* Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes to warm it up.
* Switch the automatic transmission selector to the “Drive” position and smoothly release the brake pedal. Let the car move slowly without pressing the gas pedal.
2. Driving at variable speed:
* Drive at low to medium speed (about 30-60 km/h) for about 20 minutes.
* Switch between Drive, Sport and Eco modes if available.
* Stop and start from time to time to use different gears.
3. Moderate acceleration and deceleration:
*Over the next 20 minutes, gradually increase and decrease the speed.
* Press the gas pedal smoothly and gradually, avoiding sudden acceleration.
* Brake smoothly using the brake pedal and the automatic transmission’s kick-down mode, if available.
4. Mountainous terrain (if available):
* If possible, drive in mountainous or hilly areas.
*Use the automatic transmission’s “Low” or “Hill Hold” modes, if available, to help the transmission cope with heavy loads.
5. Completion of running-in:
* Continue to drive in varying conditions over the next few days, avoiding sudden acceleration and braking.
* This will allow the new oil to completely lubricate all automatic transmission components.
Tips:
* Check the automatic transmission oil level a few days after break-in to ensure it is correct.
* Avoid towing heavy loads or driving in extreme conditions during break-in.
* If you notice any unusual noises, vibrations or leaks after break-in, contact a qualified mechanic.
Following these steps will help keep your automatic transmission in good working order and extend its service life.
