The process of running in an automatic transmission after a major overhaul
Target:
* Ensure proper running-in of the repaired automatic transmission
* Remove any remaining metal particles and debris
Stages:
1. Refilling liquid
* Fill the automatic transmission with the type and amount of transmission fluid recommended by the manufacturer.
* Make sure the fluid level is as indicated on the dipstick.
2. Warming up the engine and transmission
* Start the engine and let it idle for 15-20 minutes.
* Shift forward and backward periodically, holding each gear for 5-10 seconds.
3. Driving at low speeds
* Start driving the car at slow speeds (up to 50 km/h) for a distance of about 5-10 km.
* Accelerate and brake smoothly, avoiding sudden acceleration or braking.
4. Driving at medium speeds
* Gradually increase the speed to 80 km/h and maintain it for 10-15 km.
* Accelerate and brake smoothly again.
5. Driving at high speeds
* Increase speed to 120 km/h or maximum speed limit and maintain it for 5-10 km.
* Continue smooth acceleration and braking.
6. Long driving
* After driving at high speeds, drive another 50-100 km normally under different driving conditions.
7. Checking the fluid level and temperature of the automatic transmission
*Check the transmission fluid level cold and hot.
* Study the temperature of the automatic transmission using a scanner or temperature indicator. It should be within the recommended range.
Adviсe:
*Follow the break-in instructions provided by the transmission manufacturer or repair technician.
* Avoid towing heavy loads or using the vehicle off-road during the break-in period.
* Regularly check the fluid level and temperature of the automatic transmission.
* If you notice any unusual noises, vibrations or leaks, contact a qualified mechanic.
Run-in duration:
* Typically, running-in takes 200-300 km.
* In some cases it can last up to 500 km or more, depending on the manufacturer’s or mechanic’s recommendations.
