Replacing the torque converter of a Mercedes automatic transmission
Required tools and materials:
* Torque converter
* Transmission fluid
* Transmission pan gasket
*Transmission filter
* Pressure gauge for automatic transmission
* Set of wrenches and sockets
* Transmission jack
Precautions:
*Be sure to follow all manufacturer’s directions.
*Work in a clean and well-ventilated area.
* Use proper personal protective equipment.
* Make sure the engine and transmission are cool before starting work.
* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
Replacement procedure:
1. Preparation:
* Raise the vehicle using a transmission jack and place it on jack stands.
* Drain the transmission fluid by unscrewing the drain plug.
2. Dismantling:
* Remove the bolts securing the transmission pan.
* Carefully remove the pan and remove the gasket.
* Replace the transmission filter.
* Remove the bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel.
* Carefully pull the torque converter straight back to disconnect it from the transmission pump.
3. Installation:
* Install a new torque converter to the transmission pump.
* Install the bolts securing the torque converter to the flywheel, tightening them to the torque specified by the manufacturer.
* Install the gasket and reinstall the transmission pan. Tighten the bolts.
4. Refueling and setting:
* Fill with fresh transmission fluid through the filler plug.
* Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature.
* Using a pressure gauge, check the transmission pressure and adjust if necessary.
5. Final check:
* Lower the vehicle and check the transmission fluid level. Top up if necessary.
* Check for leaks and proper operation of the transmission.
