Required tools and materials:
* New automatic transmission heat exchanger
* New gaskets for the heat exchanger and automatic transmission housing (BMW number 24 11 1 222 496)
* New automatic transmission filter (BMW number 24 34 7 544 476)
* New automatic transmission pan gasket (BMW number 24 34 7 533 227)
* New sealing ring for automatic transmission oil drain plug (BMW number 33 32 7 533 164)
* Drain container
* 13 mm spanner
*Long Nose Pliers
* Knife or flat blade screwdriver
* ATF transmission fluid (type depends on car model)
* Rags
Instructions:
1. Preparing the car
* Park the car on a level surface.
* Put the car on the parking brake.
* Allow the engine to cool.
2. Draining transmission fluid
* Locate the automatic transmission oil drain plug at the bottom of the automatic transmission pan.
* Place a drain container under the plug.
* Loosen the oil drain plug and drain the liquid into a container.
* Replace the O-ring on the oil drain plug.
3. Removing the old heat exchanger
* Locate the automatic transmission heat exchanger located next to the radiator.
* Disconnect the coolant hoses from the heat exchanger.
* Loosen the bolts securing the heat exchanger to the automatic transmission housing.
* Remove the old heat exchanger.
4. Installation of a new heat exchanger
* Install a new heat exchanger in the automatic transmission housing.
* Tighten the bolts securing the heat exchanger.
* Connect the coolant hoses to the heat exchanger.
5. Removing the automatic transmission pan
* Locate the bolts securing the automatic transmission pan to the automatic transmission housing.
* Loosen the bolts and remove the automatic transmission pan.
* Clean the tray and magnet from metal particles.
6. Replacing the automatic transmission filter
* Remove the old automatic transmission filter from the housing.
* Install a new automatic transmission filter.
7. Installing the automatic transmission pan
* Install the gasket on the automatic transmission pan.
* Attach the automatic transmission pan to the automatic transmission housing.
* Tighten the pan mounting bolts.
8. Filling transmission fluid
* Pour new transmission fluid into the automatic transmission through the oil filler pipe.
*Check the fluid level until the level reaches the “HOT” mark.
9. Starting the engine
* Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes.
* Check for fluid leaks.
* Shift the gear selector to all positions.
10. Checking the fluid level
* Check the fluid level while the engine is idling.
*Add fluid if necessary.
11. Reset automatic transmission adaptations
* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for a few minutes.
* Reconnect the battery terminal.
* Start the engine and let it idle for 10 minutes.
* Shift the gear selector to all positions and back.
