Materials:
* New automatic transmission filter
* New automatic transmission crankcase gasket
* Transmission fluid (ATF)
* Funnel for filling liquid
* Wrenches (spanner and socket wrench sets or socket set)
* Pliers
* Drain pan
Steps:
1. Gather Materials: Gather all the necessary materials listed above.
2. Prepare the vehicle: Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
3. Raise and Secure the Vehicle: Raise the vehicle and secure it with jack stands to provide safe access from below.
4. Locate the transmission housing: Locate the transmission housing, which is usually located on the underside of the transmission.
5. Drain the ATF: Place a drain pan under the automatic transmission housing. Loosen the drain plug on the crankcase with a wrench or socket. Drain the ATF into the pan. Be careful not to spill liquid.
6. Remove the automatic transmission housing: After all the fluid has drained, use a wrench or socket to remove the bolts securing the automatic transmission housing. Carefully remove the housing from the transmission.
7. Remove the old filter: Inside the crankcase you will find the old automatic transmission filter. Carefully remove it with pliers.
8. Install New Filter: Install the new filter into the crankcase, aligning the tabs and notches. Gently push down on the filter until it fits into place.
9. Clean the crankcase gasket: Clean the automatic transmission crankcase gasket from old fluid and gaskets. Apply a thin layer of new ATF to the new crankcase gasket.
10. Install a new gasket and housing: Place a new gasket on the automatic transmission housing. Carefully attach the crankcase to the transmission, tighten the bolts by hand, and then use a wrench or socket to tighten them to the specified torque.
11. Add fresh ATF: Use a funnel to add fresh ATF through the dipstick hole. Fill in the required amount of fluid specified in the vehicle’s operating manual.
12. Check the ATF fluid level: Remove the automatic transmission dipstick and wipe it with a clean rag. Insert the dipstick back into the transmission and remove it. Check the fluid level using the marks on the dipstick. Add fluid if necessary.
13. Start the engine: Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Shift the automatic transmission selector through all gears and return it to parking mode.
14. Recheck the ATF fluid level: Turn off the engine and check the ATF fluid level again using the dipstick. Add fluid if necessary.
15. Lower and stow the vehicle: Lower the vehicle by removing the jack stands. Make sure the car is on a level surface.
Notes:
*Always follow the instructions in your specific vehicle’s owner’s manual.
*Use the transmission fluid recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.
* Dispose of used ATF fluid properly.
* When replacing the filter, it is also recommended to replace the automatic transmission housing gasket.
