Possible problems when turning on the automatic transmission:

1. The starter does not turn:

* Battery is discharged or faulty
* Faulty starter
* Poor contacts at the battery or starter terminals

2. The engine starts, but the gearbox does not engage:

*Low level or poor quality transmission fluid
* Faulty shift solenoid
* Worn or damaged friction discs
* Faulty transmission control unit

3. The gearbox switches on with a delay:

*Faulty throttle position sensor
* Faulty speed sensor
* Slipping in the torque converter

4. The gearbox starts with shocks or vibrations:

* Faulty torque converter
* Worn engine or transmission mounts
*Low transmission fluid level

5. Transmission does not shift to higher gears:

* Faulty pressure regulator
* Clogged transmission fluid filter
* Faulty transmission fluid temperature sensor

6. The transmission does not shift to lower gears:

* Faulty vacuum modulator (vacuum controlled models only)
* Faulty electronic control module (electronic controlled models only)

7. Transferring the gearbox to neutral while driving:

* Faulty shift position sensor
* Faulty torque converter lock-up solenoid

8. Transmission fluid leak:

* Damaged pan gasket
* Faulty transmission seal
* Damaged transmission fluid line

9. Strange noises when turning on the gearbox:

* Worn or damaged bearings
*Low transmission fluid level
* Faulty torque converter
