Materials:
*Automatic transmission oil (check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific specification)
*Transmission filter
* Transmission pan gasket
* Set of spanners or ratchet wrench
* Funnel
* Clean container for draining old oil
Steps:
1. Ensure safety: Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Locate the transmission pan: Look under the vehicle and locate the transmission pan. This is a metal container that is attached to the bottom of the transmission.
3. Drain the old oil: Place a clean container under the drain plug on the pan. Loosen the drain plug and allow the oil to drain.
4. Remove the pan: After the old oil has drained, remove the bolts that secure the pan to the transmission. Be careful as there may be some oil left in the pan.
5. Replace the filter: You will find the oil filter on the pan. Remove the old filter and install the new one.
6. Install a new gasket: Clean the surface of the pan and the adjacent surface of the transmission. Install a new gasket on the pan.
7. Install the pan: Lift the pan into place and tighten the mounting bolts.
8. Add New Oil: Using a funnel, add new automatic transmission oil through the dipstick hole. The amount of oil you fill depends on your car model, so check your manual.
9. Check the oil level: Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Then remove the dipstick and check the oil level. Add oil if necessary.
10. Clean the drain plug: Clean the drain plug and apply some sealant to the threads. Screw the drain plug back into place and tighten it.
11. Reset the service counter: If your vehicle has a transmission service counter, reset it according to the instructions in the manual.
Recommendations:
*Use a high quality automatic transmission oil that meets the manufacturer’s specifications.
* Replace the filter and gasket along with the oil.
* Check the transmission oil level regularly and top up if necessary.
*If you are unsure of your mechanical skills, take your oil change to a professional.
