Replacing the left automatic transmission oil seal on an Opel Insignia
Tools and materials:
* New drive seal
* Flat head screwdriver
* Pliers
* 13 mm wrench
* 32mm wrench
* Container for draining transmission fluid
* Fresh transmission fluid (Dexron VI)
* Rags or paper towels
Procedure:
1. Ensure safety. Set the parking brake and block the wheels.
2. Drain the transmission fluid. Open the drain plug on the automatic transmission pan and drain the fluid into a container. Tighten the drain plug.
3. Remove the drive shaft.
— Unscrew the drive nut using a 32mm wrench.
— Insert a flathead screwdriver between the drive and the gearbox and carefully pry the drive to release it.
— Remove the drive from the gearbox.
4. Remove the old oil seal.
— Carefully pry out the old oil seal with pliers.
— Clean the area around the oil seal seat.
5. Install a new oil seal.
— Lubricate the lip of the new oil seal with transmission fluid.
— Press the oil seal into the seat until it stops.
6. Install the drive shaft.
— Insert the drive shaft into the gearbox.
— Tighten the drive nut with a 32mm wrench.
7. Fill with transmission fluid. Open the filler plug and add fresh transmission fluid. Check the fluid level on the dipstick and add if necessary.
8. Tighten the drain and fill plugs.
9. Clean the area. Clean up any spilled liquids or dirt.
10. Check the vehicle for leaks. Start the engine and check under the car for leaks.
