The automatic transmission fluid dipstick is usually located in the engine compartment near other dipsticks such as the engine oil and brake fluid dipsticks.

Here are some common locations for the automatic transmission dipstick:

*Next to the automatic transmission canister
*Near the air filter
*Near the front of the engine
*In the rear of the engine compartment, close to the firewall
* In the tube marked “HOT” and “COLD”

How to check the fluid level in an automatic transmission using a dipstick:

1. Make sure the engine is idling and the transmission is in Park.
2. Find the automatic transmission dipstick.
3. Remove the dipstick.
4. Clear the dipstick of liquid.
5. Insert the dipstick back and remove it again.
6. Check the fluid level on the dipstick. The full range is usually indicated by two labels: “HOT” (hot) and “COLD” (cold).

Notes:

*Some vehicles may not have a traditional dipstick, but instead may check the fluid level using a diagnostic scan tool.
* Check the automatic transmission fluid level when it is warm to get an accurate reading.
* If the fluid level is outside the required range, have the problem repaired by a qualified mechanic.
