Changing the oil in the automatic transmission of Land Rover Freelander 2
Tools and materials:
* New gear oil (about 6 liters)
* New automatic transmission filter
* Automatic transmission pan gasket
* Set of wrenches and sockets
* Funnel
* Gloves
* Rags
Replacement procedure:
1. Preparing the car
* Park the car on a flat surface, put it in park and secure it with the handbrake.
* Allow the engine to cool.
2. Drain old oil
* Place a container under the automatic transmission pan.
* Unscrew the drain plug using a hex wrench.
* Drain the oil into a container.
* When the oil stops flowing, screw the drain plug back in.
3. Filter replacement
* Unscrew the bolts of the automatic transmission pan and remove it.
* Remove the old automatic transmission filter.
* Install a new filter, aligning it with the arrows on the automatic transmission pan.
4. Replacing the gasket
* Clean the surface of the automatic transmission pan and the filter cover from the old gasket.
* Install a new pan gasket.
5. Installing the automatic transmission pan
* Reinstall the automatic transmission pan and secure it with bolts.
* Tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
6. Filling with new oil
* Using a funnel, pour new oil into the automatic transmission through the filler hole.
* Raise the oil level by checking it with the dipstick. The oil level should be between the «MIN» and «MAX» marks.
7. Resetting the oil change counter
* Start the engine.
* Move the automatic transmission selector to position “D”.
*Press the gas pedal for a few seconds and release.
* Repeat this step for other selector positions (N, R).
* Move the selector to position «P».
8. Completion
* Check the oil level again and add if necessary.
* Reset the trip computer to reset the oil change counter.
Notes:
* Use gear oil recommended by the manufacturer.
*If the oil is very dark or contains metal particles, the automatic transmission may need to be flushed.
* Regularly changing automatic transmission oil will extend the life of the transmission. It is recommended to change the oil every 60,000-100,000 kilometers or according to the intervals specified in the owner’s manual.
