Changing the oil in a 2 liter Subaru Forester automatic transmission
Required tools and materials:
* Automatic transmission oil (in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations)
* New automatic transmission pan gasket
* New automatic transmission pan plug with sealing ring
* Drain plug key
* Key for removing automatic transmission pan
*Torque key
* Funnel
* Waste oil container
Oil change steps:
1. Preparation:
* Place the car on a flat surface.
* Allow the engine to cool.
* Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Draining used oil:
* Place a container under the automatic transmission drain plug.
* Unscrew the drain plug and drain the used oil.
* Replace the drain plug with a new one. Tighten it to 39 Nm.
3. Removing the automatic transmission pan:
* Unscrew the bolts securing the automatic transmission pan.
* Carefully separate the pan from the automatic transmission housing.
* Remove the old pan gasket.
4. Cleaning the tray and magnets:
* Clean the automatic transmission pan from deposits and dirt.
* Remove metal particles from the magnets located in the tray.
5. Installing a new filter:
*If your Forester model has an external automatic transmission filter, remove the old filter and install a new one.
6. Installation of the pallet:
* Install a new pan gasket on the automatic transmission housing.
* Attach the tray with bolts. Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm.
7. Filling with new oil:
* Using a funnel, pour new oil into the automatic transmission.
* The amount of oil to be filled depends on the model and year of manufacture of the vehicle (see the owner’s manual).
8. Checking the oil level:
* Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature.
* Switch the automatic transmission selector to each position, holding each position for a few seconds.
* Place the selector lever in the «P» (park) position.
* Pull out the automatic transmission dipstick and check the oil level. Add oil if necessary.
* The oil level should be between the “min” and “max” marks on the dipstick.
9. Reset adaptations:
* After changing the oil, connect the negative terminal of the battery.
* Start the engine and let it idle for 10 minutes.
* Switch the automatic transmission selector to each position, holding each position for a few seconds.
* This will help the automatic transmission adapt to the new oil.
10. Completion:
* Check the automatic transmission oil level again and make sure it is at the proper level.
* Attach a sticker on the glass or under the hood with the date and mileage of the oil change.
