Materials needed to change automatic transmission oil in a 2016 Ford Fiesta:
*Ford MERCON LV gear oil or equivalent
* New automatic transmission oil filter
* New automatic transmission pan gasket
* Keys for drain and filler plugs
* 10mm wrench
* Funnel
* Rags or gloves
Steps to change automatic transmission oil:
1. Ensure safety. Place the vehicle on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Raise the car. Raise the front of the car using a jack or lift.
3. Determine the location of the automatic transmission pan. Use your owner’s manual or vehicle diagram to locate the transmission pan, usually located on the bottom of the transmission.
4. Drain the automatic transmission oil. Place a container under the pan to collect the oil. Unscrew the drain plug using a size wrench. The oil will begin to drain. Let as much oil drain as possible.
5. Remove the automatic transmission pan. After the oil has drained, remove the bolts securing the pan to the transmission. Carefully remove the pan, being careful not to damage the gasket.
6. Replace the oil filter. Remove the old oil filter and install a new one. Seal the joint with a small amount of oil.
7. Clean the tray and magnets. Clean the tray and any magnets inside of any metal particles or dirt.
8. Install a new pan gasket. Apply a thin layer of sealant to the new pan gasket. Install the gasket onto the pan.
9. Install the automatic transmission pan. Carefully lift the pan and install it onto the transmission. Tighten the pan mounting bolts.
10. Fill with new automatic transmission oil. Using a funnel, pour new automatic transmission oil into the transmission. Add as much oil as spilled.
11. Check the oil level. Start the engine and let it idle. Check the oil level using the automatic transmission oil dipstick. Add oil if necessary.
12. Check for leaks. Shift the gear selector through all positions. Check the pan and connections for leaks.
13. Reset the automatic transmission oil aging counter. Consult your owner’s manual or online forums for specific instructions on how to reset the automatic transmission oil aging counter.
14. Lower the vehicle. Slowly lower the vehicle from the jack or lift.
15. Connect the battery terminal. Connect the negative terminal of the battery.
