Shifting gears on a Nissan X-Trail automatic transmission

Engaging reverse gear

*Press the brake pedal.
* Move the gear lever to the “R” position.
* Release the parking brake.

Engaging Neutral

*Press the brake pedal.
* Move the gear lever to the “N” position.

Enabling Parking Mode

*Press the brake pedal.
* Move the gear lever to the “P” position.
* Apply the parking brake.

Switching to manual gear shift mode

* Move the gear lever to position “D”.
* Move the lever to the right to the side position “±”.
* To shift to a higher gear, push the lever forward (+).
* To downshift, push the lever backward (-).

Switching automatic transmission modes

* Mode D (Drive): Normal driving mode, automatic gear shift.
* S (Sport) mode: A more sporty mode, gears shift at higher revs.
* L (Low) mode: Mode for off-road or steep descents, gears shift at lower speeds.

Notes:

* Shift gears only with the brake pedal depressed.
* Do not shift into neutral while driving as this may cause you to lose control of the vehicle.
*Be sure to come to a complete stop before moving the gearshift lever to park.
