Types of gearboxes

* 3-speed automatic (JATCO AT-3): early model, installed before 1980.
* 4-speed automatic (JATCO AT-4): installed on models from 1980 to 1991.
* 5-speed automatic (JATCO 5R01A): installed on models from 1992 to 1998.
* 4-speed automatic with electronic control (JATCO RE4F03B): installed on models from 1999 to 2001.
*CVT (CVT): installed on some Bluebird Sylphy models.

Switching modes

* D (Drive): normal driving mode.
* 2 (Second): Forces second gear to improve traction and engine braking.
* L (Low): Forces first gear for maximum engine braking.
* R (Reverse): reverse.
* P (Park): Parking mode.

Peculiarities

* Some models are equipped with an overdrive (O/D) function that reduces engine speed at high speeds to save fuel.
*Late electronically controlled models have a winter mode feature that helps prevent wheel spin on slippery surfaces.

Service

* Check the level and condition of the transmission fluid regularly.
* Replace transmission fluid and filter according to manufacturer’s recommendations (usually every 60,000-90,000 km).
* If necessary, diagnose and repair the gearbox at an authorized service center.
