Transmission position sensor (neutral)

Purpose:

Determines the position of the Mitsubishi Pajero gearbox selector and transmits this information to the ECU.

Location:

* On the gearbox housing
*Near the gear lever

Sensor types:

There are two main types of transmission position sensors for Mitsubishi Pajero:

* Neutral sensor: Only works in ‘N’ (neutral) position
* All Gear Position Sensor: Detects all gear selector positions including ‘N’, ‘D’, ‘R’ etc.

Functions:

*Determines the position of the gear selector
* Transmits information to the ECU
* Controls engine starting (allows engine starting only in ‘N’ or ‘P’ position)
* Turns off reversing lights when switched to ‘D’ position
* Enables cruise control only in position ‘D’ or ‘4’

Malfunctions:

A faulty transmission position sensor can cause problems such as:

* Difficulty starting the engine
* Starting the engine in ‘D’ or ‘R’ position
*No reversing lights
* Inability to turn on cruise control
* Incorrect operation of the speedometer or tachometer in ‘D’ mode

Diagnostics and replacement:

Diagnosis of a faulty transmission position sensor can be done using an OBDII scanner or visual inspection. Replacing the sensor usually requires removing the air filter and other components that provide access to the transmission housing.
