Replacing the Mitsubishi automatic transmission shift lever

Tools and materials:

* New gear lever
* Wrench set
* Phillips screwdriver
* Lubricant for transmission parts
* Plotter or punching tool

Steps:

1. Security:

* Park the car on a level surface.
* Park the car.
*Remove the negative terminal from the battery to cut off the power.

2. Remove the gear lever trim:

* Slide up the rubber boot of the gear lever.
*Locate the screw or latches holding the trim to the console.
* Remove the screws or detach the latches.
*Remove trim.

3. Remove the old gear shift lever:

* Press the shift lever lock button on the steering column (if equipped).
* Move the gear shift lever to the “Park” position.
*Locate the bolt or clamp that secures the shift lever to the transmission.
* Unscrew the bolt or loosen the clamp.
* Carefully remove the shift lever from the transmission.

4. Turn off the gear selector:

* Locate the gear selector on the underside of the gear lever.
* Rotate the selector to the position appropriate for your specific Mitsubishi model (usually “P” for Park).

5. Installing a new gear shift lever:

*Apply some transmission lube to the gear selector shaft.
* Install a new shift lever to the transmission.
* Tighten the bolt or secure the clamp.

6. Install the gear lever trim:

* If necessary, adjust the position of the gear shift lever.
* Install the shift lever trim.
* Tighten the screws or latches.

7. Connect the battery:

* Connect the negative terminal to the battery.

8. Check for correct operation:

* Start the engine.
* Check that the gear shift lever operates correctly in all positions.

9. ECU reset (if necessary):

*Some Mitsubishi models may require you to reset the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) after replacing the shift lever.
*Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual or auto mechanic for specific instructions.
