Replacing the shaft seal of a Mercedes automatic transmission
Tools and materials:
* Set of keys
* Hammer
* Flat head screwdriver
* New shank oil seal
* Gear oil
* Clean rags
* Gloves
Procedure:
1. Remove the driveshaft. Mark the position of the driveshaft relative to the gearbox flange to ensure proper reinstallation. Using a wrench, loosen the bolts connecting the driveshaft to the gearbox flange and remove the driveshaft.
2. Raise the car. Raise the rear of the vehicle on a lift or using jacks and stands.
3. Drain the transmission oil. Remove the drain plug on the automatic transmission housing and drain the oil into a prepared container.
4. Remove the shank cover. Using a wrench, loosen the bolts securing the tailgate cover to the transmission housing and remove the cover.
5. Knock out the old oil seal. Using a flathead screwdriver or special tool, carefully knock the old oil seal out of its socket. Be careful not to damage the inside of the transmission housing.
6. Install a new oil seal. Apply a small amount of sealant to the outer edge of the new oil seal and carefully press it into the socket. Use a suitable tool or a hammer with a wooden block.
7. Replace the shank cover. Clean the mating surface on the gearbox housing and tail cover. Apply sealant to the sealing surface of the cover and install it in place. Torque the bolts to manufacturer specifications.
8. Install the driveshaft. Reinstall the driveshaft onto the gearbox flange and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Make sure the driveshaft is in the same position as before removal.
9. Fill with transmission oil. Pour new transmission oil into the automatic transmission crankcase through the filler hole. The oil level should be within the «OIL LEVEL» mark.
10. Start the engine and check for leaks. Start the engine and let it idle. Check under the car for transmission oil leaks.
