Mercedes-Benz gearbox oil temperature sensor

The Transmission Oil Temperature (ATF) sensor plays an important role in ensuring optimal performance and protection of your automatic transmission (ATF) or dual clutch transmission (MCT).

Function:

The ATF temperature sensor measures the temperature of the transmission fluid inside the transmission. When the ATF temperature rises above set limits, the sensor sends a signal to the transmission control module (TCM), which can take the following actions:

* Enable ATF cooling system to dissipate heat
* Reduce ATF pressure in the gearbox
* Limit torque transmission until ATF temperature returns to normal range

Types of Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission oil temperature sensors:

*Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) ATF Temperature Sensors: These sensors use a semiconductor resistor whose resistance increases with temperature.
* Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) ATF Temperature Sensors: These sensors use a semiconductor resistor whose resistance decreases as temperature increases.

Location:

The automatic transmission oil temperature sensor is usually located in the oil pan, heat exchanger or transmission oil filter. The exact location depends on the model and year of the vehicle.

Malfunctions of the automatic transmission oil temperature sensor:

A faulty ATF temperature sensor can lead to a variety of problems, including:

* Incorrect ATF temperature readings
* Inability to turn on the ATF cooling system
* Reduced ATF pressure in the gearbox
* Torque transmission limitation
*Damage to gearbox due to overheating

Replacing the automatic transmission oil temperature sensor:

Replacing the automatic transmission oil temperature sensor is usually a relatively simple procedure. However, it is important to use the original manufacturer-recommended part to ensure proper operation and reliability.

Symptoms of a faulty automatic transmission oil temperature sensor:

*Transmission shaking or slipping
* Gear shift delay
*Increased ATF temperature
* The transmission fault indicator on the dashboard lights up
*ATF leaks from transmission

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is recommended that you have your transmission oil temperature sensor diagnosed and replaced if necessary by a qualified mechanic.
