Instructions for replacing the automatic transmission speed sensor on a Mazda 6:

1. Make sure it’s safe. Before you begin, put the car on the parking brake and disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Locate the sensor. The automatic transmission speed sensor is usually located on the transmission housing.
3. Disconnect the sensor connector. Grasp the connector and gently pull it to disconnect it from the sensor.
4. Unscrew the sensor. Using a suitable wrench or socket, unscrew the automatic transmission speed sensor from the transmission housing. Be careful not to drop the bolt or gasket.
5. Clean the installation site. Remove any dirt or debris from the sensor installation area.
6. Apply sealant to the new sensor. Apply a thin layer of thread sealant to the threads of the new sensor.
7. Screw in the new sensor. Screw the new sensor into the transmission housing, finger-tight, and then finally tighten with a wrench or socket.
8. Connect the connector. Connect the connector to the new sensor. Make sure it is securely fastened.
9. Connect the negative terminal of the battery. Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery to restore power.
10. Reset the fault code. If the automatic transmission speed sensor was faulty, you may need to clear the trouble code using a diagnostic scanner.
11. Check the operation of the sensor. Start the engine and put the car into drive mode. Make sure the gauge is working correctly and the speedometer is displaying the correct speed.
