How to operate an automatic transmission (AT)
Step 1: Getting to know the gear selector
* P (Parking): Locks the wheels, designed for parking and towing.
* R (Reverse): Engages reverse gear.
* N (Neutral): Disconnects the transmission from the engine, like a «manual neutral».
* D (Drive): Primary gear for normal driving.
* [Numbers 1 to 3]: Manual modes that block transmission on a specified number.
Step 2: Starting the Engine
* Make sure the gear selector is in P or N position.
* Apply the brake and turn the ignition key.
Step 3: Switch to Drive Mode
* Release the brake and move the gear selector to position D.
* The car will start moving forward.
Step 4: Braking and Stopping
* To brake, press the brake pedal.
* The vehicle will decelerate and the transmission will automatically downshift.
* To come to a complete stop, apply the brake fully and hold the gear selector in position D.
Step 5: Upshift and Downshift (Manual Modes)
* To upshift, move the gear selector to the left (+) or press the gear selector on the steering wheel.
* To downshift, move the gear selector to the right (-) or press the steering wheel switch.
Adviсe
* Always move the gear selector to P when the vehicle is parked.
* Do not switch to R driving mode while the vehicle is moving forward.
*Manual modes can be used for better vehicle control on slopes or when towing.
* Focus on the road and be ready to react to the traffic situation.
* Don’t be afraid to practice driving an automatic car until you feel confident.
