Location and purpose of the automatic transmission selector position sensor in Hyundai Solaris
The automatic transmission selector position sensor (also known as Range Sensor or PRNDS) is a device that detects the position of the gear selector and sends a corresponding signal to the electronic control unit (ECU).
In Hyundai Solaris, the automatic transmission selector position sensor is located on the outside of the gearbox housing and is connected to the gear shift lever.
Functions of the automatic transmission selector position sensor
* Determination of gear selector position (P, R, N, D, S)
* Transferring information about the selector lever position to the ECU
* Starter interlock control (prevents engine starting if selector lever is not in P or N position)
* Adjustment of engine and transmission operating modes depending on the selected selector position
Types of automatic transmission selector position sensors
Hyundai Solaris uses an electronic shift position sensor that generates an electrical signal depending on the position of the gear lever.
Signs of a malfunction of the automatic transmission selector position sensor
* Difficulty shifting gears
* Inability to shift the gearbox to a certain position
* Flashing or no indication of the selector position on the instrument panel
* The engine cannot be started if the selector lever is not in position P or N
* Engine and transmission operating modes do not correspond to the selected selector position
Diagnostics and replacement of the automatic transmission selector position sensor
Diagnosis of a malfunction of the automatic transmission selector position sensor can be performed using a diagnostic scanner. Replacing the sensor usually requires removing the lower part of the transmission housing and disconnecting the sensor from the shift lever.
