Replacing the left-hand drive oil seal of an automatic transmission on a Hyundai Getz
Required tools and materials:
* Set of sockets and wrenches
* Flat head screwdriver
* Sealant (optional)
* New left automatic transmission oil seal
Instructions:
1. Ensure safety: Set the vehicle’s parking brake and block the wheels with wheel chocks. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Remove the wheel: Loosen the driver’s side wheel bolts without removing them completely. Raise the car with a jack and remove the wheel.
3. Remove the caliper and brake rotor: Remove the bolts holding the brake caliper and disconnect the caliper from the wheel hub. Hang the caliper on a wire or rope. Remove the brake disc.
4. Remove the drive shaft: Unscrew the central wheel hub nut. Insert a flat head screwdriver between the drive shaft and the axle shaft and carefully pry them apart. Pull the drive shaft out of the wheel hub.
5. Remove the oil seal: Clean the surface of the axle shaft from dirt. Using a flathead screwdriver or special tool, carefully pry and remove the old oil seal.
6. Install the new oil seal: Lightly coat the lips of the new oil seal with transmission fluid. Carefully insert the oil seal into the axle shaft by tapping it with a hammer through a block of wood.
7. Install Drive Shaft: Insert the drive shaft into the axle shaft and tighten the wheel hub center nut.
8. Install the brake disc and caliper: Install the brake disc to the wheel hub. Reinstall the caliper and tighten the bolts.
9. Install the wheel: Install the wheel and tighten the bolts by hand. Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts with a torque wrench to manufacturer specifications.
10. Connect the battery: Connect the negative terminal of the battery.
Additionally:
* Before installing a new seal, you can apply sealant to the inside of the axle shaft to prevent leakage.
* If significant wear is detected on the drive or bearings, they must also be replaced.
