Description of the speed sensor on Hyundai Elantra with automatic transmission:

The speed sensor (also known as the input speed sensor) is an important component of the automatic transmission (AT) in the Hyundai Elantra. It is responsible for detecting the rotational speed of the transmission input shaft and transmitting this signal to the transmission control module (TCM).

Speed sensor location:

On a Hyundai Elantra with an automatic transmission, the speed sensor is usually located next to the transmission, in the gearbox housing. It is attached to the transmission housing and is directed towards a ring gear attached to the input shaft.

Speed sensor function:

The speed sensor generates an electrical signal that is proportional to the speed of rotation of the transmission input shaft. This signal is sent to the TCM, which uses this information to:

* Determining proper gear shift timing
* Adjustment of hydraulic pressure in transmission
* Detects clutch slippage and other transmission problems

Types of speed sensors:

Hyundai Elantra with automatic transmission can use two types of speed sensors:

* Hall Sensor: This type of sensor uses the Hall effect to detect speed. The Hall sensor consists of a magnetic field sensor and a signal processing unit. When the ring gear rotates near the sensor, it creates a change in the magnetic field that is detected by the Hall effect sensor. The Hall sensor converts this change into an electrical signal.
*Resistive sensor: This type of sensor uses a resistor and a potentiometer. As the ring gear rotates near the sensor, it changes the resistance of the resistor, creating a corresponding change in voltage. The potentiometer measures this voltage change and converts it into an electrical signal.

Replacing the speed sensor:

If the speed sensor fails, it can lead to improper shifting, clutch slippage, and other transmission problems. If such symptoms occur, it is recommended to replace the speed sensor as soon as possible.

To replace the speed sensor, you need to remove the transmission housing and some automatic transmission components. Replacement should be performed by a qualified mechanic.
