Torque converter automatic transmission Subaru Legacy

The torque converter (CT) is an integral component of the Subaru Legacy automatic transmission (AT) and performs the following functions:

Design features:

* The GT in the Subaru Legacy automatic transmission is a closed housing filled with transmission fluid.
* It consists of three main elements: pump wheel, turbine wheel and stator.
* The pump wheel is driven by the engine crankshaft.
* The turbine wheel is connected to the automatic transmission shaft.

Working principle:

*When the engine starts, the pump wheel rotates the transmission fluid, creating pressure.
* Fluid under pressure is directed to the turbine wheel, which begins to rotate along with the automatic transmission shaft.
* The stator, located between the pump and turbine wheels, regulates the flow of fluid, creating a hydraulic transformer effect.

Functions:

* Power Transfer: The GT transfers power from the engine to the automatic transmission.
* Torque multiplication: When the turbine wheel rotates slower than the pump wheel, the GT creates additional torque on the automatic transmission shaft, making starting and acceleration easier.
* Torsional Vibration Damping: The GT acts as a damper between the engine and automatic transmission, absorbing torsional vibrations and reducing wear on transmission components.
*Lockup: On select Subaru Legacy GT models, the GT is equipped with a lockup feature that connects the pump and turbine wheels, allowing direct power transfer and improving fuel economy.

Service:

* Transmission fluid in the GT must be replaced in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
* If necessary, the GT can be repaired or replaced by a qualified mechanic.
