Torque converter automatic transmission Ford Mondeo 4
The torque converter is an important component of the Ford Mondeo 4 automatic transmission. It transfers torque from the engine to the gearbox, ensuring smooth gear changes and torque conversion.
Design and operation
The torque converter consists of three main elements:
* Pump: Driven by the engine and creates a flow of oil.
* Turbine: Connected to the gearbox input shaft.
* Reactor: Located between the pump and turbine and directs the flow of oil to convert torque.
When the engine is running, the pump forces oil into the turbine. The oil causes the turbine to rotate, transmitting torque to the gearbox. The reactor directs the flow of oil to create pressure and increase torque.
Under high load or low speed conditions, the torque converter acts as a torque converter, increasing the torque available to the transmission. At higher speeds, it acts like a clutch, transmitting torque without increasing.
Torque converter malfunctions
Common torque converter faults include:
*Slipping: When the torque converter fails to properly transmit torque, causing the transmission to slip.
* Vibration or hum: May indicate worn bearings or damaged blades.
*Oil Leak: May be caused by damaged torque converter housing or seals.
Service
The torque converter is a sealed unit and usually does not require regular maintenance. However, it is recommended to change the transmission fluid and filter at recommended intervals to ensure optimal transmission performance.
Replacing the torque converter
If the torque converter fails, it must be replaced. This is a complex process that must be performed by a qualified mechanic. This usually involves removing the transmission and disassembling the torque converter.
