How to warm up an automatic transmission in winter
1. Start the car and let it idle.
— This will allow the engine to gradually warm up and accelerate the circulating transmission oil.
2. Switch the automatic transmission selector to the “P” (park) position.
— This will take the stress off the transmission and allow the oil to circulate better.
3. Let the car idle for another 3-5 minutes.
— During this time, the oil in the box must reach operating temperature.
4. Move the automatic transmission selector to position “D” (drive).
— When moving the selector to position «D» you will begin to feel some resistance, since the oil in the box will thicken in the cold.
5. Drive away carefully and accelerate slowly.
— Avoid sudden acceleration and gear changes. This will allow the oil to be evenly distributed throughout the entire box and reach operating temperature.
6. For the first few kilometers of driving, drive the car at low speeds.
— This will allow the oil to finally warm up and achieve optimal viscosity.
Adviсe:
* In extremely cold conditions, you can further warm up the transmission by shifting the automatic transmission selector to the «N» (neutral) position and allowing the vehicle to idle for several minutes before driving.
* Never tow a vehicle with an automatic transmission over long distances until the oil in the transmission has warmed up.
* Use gear oil recommended by the vehicle manufacturer for the winter season.
* Check the transmission oil level and condition regularly.
