Caution: Unlocking the automatic transmission torque converter requires special knowledge and tools. An incorrect procedure may result in damage to the transmission. If you do not have the necessary skills, it is highly recommended that you seek assistance from a qualified mechanic.
Materials:
* Wrench
*Additional transmission fluid
* New locking pin
Steps:
1. Ensure safety: Park the vehicle on a level, level surface. Apply the parking brake.
2. Remove the oil pan: Unscrew the bolts holding the automatic transmission oil pan and carefully remove it. Drain all transmission fluid into a sump with a capacity of at least 6 liters.
3. Pull out the torque converter: Locate the torque converter in the center of the transmission. Carefully pry it up with a screwdriver and slide it out of the transmission about an inch.
4. Remove the locking pin: Locate the locking pin in the center of the torque converter. Gently knock it out using a hammer and impact tool.
5. Insert new locking pin: Install the new locking pin into the hole. Drive it flush with the surface of the torque converter.
6. Reinstall the torque converter: Carefully insert the torque converter back into the transmission. Press down until you hear a click indicating it is locked in place.
7. Install the oil pan: Clean the oil pan gasket surface. Apply a thin layer of RTV sealant and install the oil pan in place. Tighten the bolts to vehicle manufacturer’s specifications.
8. Fill with transmission fluid: Fill with new transmission fluid through the dipstick hole. Add the amount of liquid specified by the manufacturer.
9. Check the fluid level: Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Check the fluid level with a dipstick and adjust it if necessary.
Note:
* Some torque converters have more than one pin. In this case, you may need to remove and replace all the pins.
* After completing the procedure, it is recommended to drive the car for several kilometers to check its operation.
