Most cars with an automatic transmission have a ‘limp home’ mode that can be activated when transmission problems occur.

Instructions for enabling ‘limp home’ mode:

1. Stop the engine.
2. Move the gear selector to the ‘Park’ (P) position.
3. Start the engine and keep the brake pedal depressed.
4. Move the gear selector to the ‘Drive’ position (D).
5. Release the brake pedal and slowly pick up speed.

In ‘limp home’ mode the transmission will only operate in one gear, usually third or fourth. This allows the car to move, but limits its top speed.

NOTES:

*The procedure for enabling ‘limp home’ mode may vary depending on your vehicle. Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific instructions.
* ‘limp home’ mode is intended for short-term use. Take your vehicle to a mechanic as soon as possible for professional repairs.
* Driving in ‘limp home’ mode may cause further damage to the transmission.
